Parag’s father came to the United States from India and spent his savings on a small business. For a little over two years, he worked 80 to 90 hours a week to keep it going.

Then, the state told him the business owed hundreds of thousands of dollars in back sales taxes. He had paid his own. The debt was the previous owners’ because Parag’s father bought the existing company instead of forming a new one to take over the store, the old owner’s unpaid tax bill, which no one had told him about, became his.

He had no realistic way to pay it, so he closed the store and went back to working for someone else. No experienced lawyer had advised him along the way.

That experience stayed with Parag and is what led him to become a lawyer.
